OUR STORY
Gentilly is owned by long-term Excelsior residents Sarah Duncan and Alexis Hyatt who developed Gentilly over their shared love for New Orleans food and culture. An eclectic French quarter-themed establishment, Gentilly offers a full bar serving up classic New Orleans cocktails, like a Hurricaine, as well as rotating house craft cocktails developed by bar managers Brett Davis and Jake Hirschfeld.
Sarah brings the heat with classic dishes like Gumbo and Red Beans and Rice while also bringing in some modern flare with dishes like the Fried Chicken and a Macaroni and Cheese Waffle. And if anyone has room left, Alexis dishes out the sweetness with treats like beignets, flourless chocolate cake and many other baked delights.
Gentilly is a cozy and quirky neighborhood gathering spot that offers a relaxed and bohemian break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Sarah Duncan
Sarah is a self-taught chef with over twenty years experience in the bar and restaurant industry. Her experience ranges from table and bar service to restaurant administration, ending up some years ago in the back of house, quickly acquiring the skills to not only cook, but also properly manage a kitchen and its staff. In 2004, Sarah relocated from Texas to San Francisco quickly landing a job in North Beach at a new restaurant as their opening bar manager. She continued on in the industry as a bartender/ bar manager for several years, and then she began to really focus her efforts toward the kitchen where she really discovered her passion for food. She has been a resident of the Excelsior neighborhood for many years where she has raised two children as well as being employed at a local neighborhood bar, The Broken Record. Being raised in Texas, Sarah’s food has a nice flare of smoke with some California love.
Alexis Hyatt
Alexis spent her early career as a social worker and as a cocktail waitress in many different San Francisco establishments. After completing a Masters of Social Welfare from UC Berkeley, she took an unexpected path and became a baker and owner at Arizmendi, a network of worker cooperatives in the Bay Area. It was here her interest in both the baking craft and her passion for running a business blossomed. In early 2019, after the death of her father and the birth of her son, Alexis left Arizmendi to begin pursuing her own business plans. She is driven by the work ethic of her father Dana Hyatt, the CEO and founder of GSO, one of the most successful overnight delivery companies on the West Coast. She is excited to start bringing sweet baked delights to the bar/restaurant culture and to building a great business to help accentuate the Excelsior corridor. When not working she can be found spending time with family and friends or playing fiddle and singing with her band Minus Mary.
